Internship/Volunteer Opportunities
at NMI Tibet


The Ngak Mang Institute of America is pleased to announce a joint internship/volunteer program with its sister institution in Amdo (Qinghai, China). We offer opportunities for current students, recent graduates, and other volunteers throughout the academic year and summer.


Job Qualifications

- Passion for Tibetan culture, educational instruction and outreach, health and wellness, economic and societal development, and/or the environment.
- Chinese and/or Tibetan language skills a plus.
- Willingness to spend at least one month in Western China.
- Ability to show sensitivity toward a foreign culture.
- A nuanced understanding of the political, economic, and societal realities of life in China is extremely beneficial.

Job Description

Depending on the number of interns/volunteers working concurrently at Ngak Mang Institute Amdo (Qinghai, China), participants can expect to work on at least one or two of the following projects:

1) Teach English-language classes for the local population.
2) Research grants and other sources of funding for NMI.
3) Travel to various program sites in Qinghai in order to assist NMI staff with development work.

All interns/volunteers will assist NMI USA directors and officers with operations in both America and Western China. Interns/volunteers are delegated tasks pertaining to Tibetan culture, education, health, development, the environment, and public relations.

NMI interns/volunteers are welcome to enroll in Chinese and/or Tibetan language classes at Qinghai University for Nationalities during their stay in Xining, China.


Prospective applicants are asked to submit a resume and cover letter regarding their interest in The Ngak Mang Institute. We will subsequently ask all promising candidates to undergo an interview process as well as submit a letter of recommendation.

Volunteers who are not currently attending school are accepted on a rolling basis, but must contact us at least 1-2 months in advance.

The Ngak Mang Institute of America is pleased to announce a new internship/volunteer program based in the United States.

Job Description

The Ngak Mang Institute seeks interns/volunteers to help assist with its day-to-day operations. This is an opportunity to gain direct experience in NGO operation and management as well as learn about Tibet. All interns will assist NMI USA directors and officers with programs in America and Tibetan regions. Interns are delegated tasks pertaining to Tibetan culture, education, health, development, the environment, and public relations, including some of the following:

1) Work with staff to carry out Traditional Tibetan Medicine classes, which will take place in New York City from September 17th-October 4th, 2007.
2) Serve as an NMI volunteer during Tibetfest III, which will take place in Connecticut from September 29th-30th, 2007.
3) Research sources of funding for NMI and assist in grant writing.
4) Help schedule public talks on Tibetan culture, society, medicine, and a variety of other related topics.
5) Assist the Director with our Women's Development Project and Women's Health Initiative.

We welcome students and other volunteers from all over the United States, regardless of whether they can participate in our on-site activities. The number of hours worked per week is flexible.

Interns/volunteers who work with us during the academic year receive preferential treatment when applying for our summer, fall, and spring internships in ethnographic Tibet.
