The Ngak Mang Institute was developed as a worldwide non-profit organization in 2000. Its mission is to preserve the cultural and non-monastic spiritual Ngakpa Tibetan tradition in modern society.

The United States office seeks to address the following areas:

Culture

• Promote and protect traditional Tibetan culture.

Education - Instruction and Outreach

• Support the work of the Ngak Mang Institute’s boys’ and girls’ schools in Qinghai, China by providing scholarships to impoverished students.
• Support the publication of Tibetan texts.
• Support the foundation of a Tibetan library in Xining, Qinghai to promote Tibetan literacy and offer courses regarding Tibetan traditional culture.
• Provide Tibetan students in Asia scholarships and opportunities to study in the USA, especially to train translators.
• Set up study centers and libraries in the USA.
• Research and publish works on Tibetan culture, the Ngakpa tradition, and Traditional Tibetan Medicine.

Health

• Develop wellness programs which educate Tibetans regarding local diseases and HIV/AIDS awareness.
• Promote the study of Tibetan Medicine and Massage in the United States by offering certificate courses and spiritual retreats to the general public. The US office will carry out such activities under the auspices of the Ngak Mang Institute’s International Academy for Traditional Tibetan Medicine.
This fall, Dr. Nida Chenagtsang will offer classes in New York. Courses run from September 20th to October 4th.
• Produce Traditional Tibetan herbal food supplements, massage products, et cetera.
• Create centers for the education and practice of Traditional Tibetan Medicine.

Development

• Sponsor and Oversee a Women’s Development Project. NMI will spearhead a program to teach Amdo [Qinghai] Tibetan women traditional handicraft production methods in order to improve their economic situation. NMI will market the handicrafts domestically and internationally. The majority of the profits will remain in the hands of the local women, while the remainder will fund NMI scholarships for Tibetan girls.

Environment

• Support programs that promote sustainable ecological development and the protection of wildlife and natural resources in Amdo Tibetan areas.
